I'm assuming that by now you know one way or the other. I think most people either lift the broody ( and try not to lose a hand! LOL) or they just watch and wait to see it they catch a glance of a baby or until Momma broody leaves the nest, either with chicks or without.

I would guess molt. I don't see any evidence of mites or lice. Do you ever see any other chickens picking at her feathers? If so, you may have a feather eater, but I don't really have any experience with them.

That depends on whether or not you have any broody hens. As far as I know, you can't just give them to any ol hen & expect the hen to mother them. The hen has to be broody and you have to sneak them into her nest/under her to make her think that she hatched them.

How old were they when you went in the hospital? Were they being turned at all? Were they in the air conditioned house or exposed to the high temperatures? Those questions ( and probably others) affect the answer to the question of viability.

It sounds like it has pipped. Give it 24 hours. It should zip by then. After it zips it should hatch in an hour or so ( I'm thinking Or less, but I'm not positive). What is your humidity at? Don't open the incubator!! That contributes very quickly to "shrink wrapped" chicks (where the...

I have seen people post that you can add dry rice to your incubator to help bring down humidity. I've never had to try it though. Good luck!

I would try adding vitamins to her water. I've heard that chickens will sometimes eat feathers if they are lacking some vitamin. Anyway, even if that isn't the problem, the vitamins won't hurt her. Good luck.

I would pick up your chicken and look closely at its skin and shaft of feathers. Do you see any mites or lice or nits ( lice egg)? If your not sure what they look like google it or search for it here in BYC. I know there is an article featured on the home page. Some mites come out at night...

I haven't lost any more chicks! I am still not sure what happened, but whether it is the Corid, the grit, both or neither, I'm just glad it doesn't continue to be a problem!

Thanks, unfortunately the pullet that I didn't think would make it, didn't. I just checked on her a little while ago. I am going to look for some Corid tomorrow. I figure it can't hurt. I also started giving them very small grit. They gobbled it up! Haven't lost any more yet, so I'm...

I need help & advice. I hatched 4 Penedesenca eggs on Feb27 - March 1st. The last one had gotten shrink wrapped & needed help. She came out with some pretty severe leg problems & eventually died. The other 3 ( 2 pullets/1 cockerel) were doing great. I hatched out 21 more eggs in the Easter HAL...
