5 eggs in 3 days from 2 hens, not bad! Now if the rest would get on board it world be great! So far only Penny-my GSL, and l Lil' red-my RIR have figure out what to do... Hopefully they will teach the rest!
Make that 2 eggs! Not sure who the second one is from but I suspect my RIR! Went to take them some cantaloupe and looked in the boxes again just for fun and found egg #2!
We got out first egg! My GSL started singing yesterday but I found no egg.. Today I heard her sing at about 11 AM but didn't go right away to look. I went out just now and found a small brown egg!
OK, thanks for all the info! Several are squatting--now that I know what it means.. Lol. The 2 in question have larger combs that have turned red and have lately been spending more time inside the henhouse scratching around. Hopefully I will get that first egg soon! Maybe the weather will cool...
Do they start singing the egg song before they actually lay? I heard my GSL "singing" this morning about 9 am. It sounded just like the hens in this link. I had gone out there earlier and she and my RIR were squawking up a storm and it almost sounded like the egg song. Then when I was about to...
Very hot here in Southeast TX as well. I read that you can freeze a milk jug of water and put it out there and they will huddle around it to stay cool. I just emptied a milk jug and have it freezing... Our coop is raised and our hens get underneath it to be shaded. I was thinking of putting it...
My hens are all 20 weeks. Luckily I have a friend with a large flock who shares eggs with me as we are still eagerly awaiting the first egg. We went to IHOP today after a dr. Appt that I had. Not thinking, I order a plate that contains eggs. After eating fresh eggs for months now, those IHOP...
I have 2 RIR, 2 BO, 2 GSL. They are all going to be 20 weeks tomorrow. No eggs yet. I don't understand all this talk about squatting. I can see how they would feel the need to squat some before they start laying, but I don't understand why people keep mentioning them squatting when you touch...
I managed to check a couple of my hens today. I checked the ones whose combs have gotten bigger and darker within the last week or so. I managed to find the pelvis bones and a RIR and a BO both had bones that were opened about a finger width. I will continue to check them about once a week. what...
When I first read this, I was really thinking that my hens would not tolerate this procedure, but when I went out there this morning. I gently scooped up one of my RIRs and she was very accommodating. My problem is that I don't know what I'm looking for. I mean, I know where my pelvis bones...
Aww poor little things. I am so afraid to free range my chickens because of this. They are in a pen that is completely enclosed. It is plenty big enough to not let them out but I do let them out in the yard when I can stay with them. We have leash laws around here but few people abide by it. So...
My hens are 13 weeks and I know I still have a while before there will be eggs, I have to admit that I peek into the nest boxes every couple of days anyway.. Mine are RIR, Buff Orpington, Gold sex link, and speckled Sussex.
