    It has oyster shell in it. Theoretically, that would not be good for your chicks.

    Depending on what part of the country you live in, many soils have plenty of grit in them. Dirt is what I sweep up off my kitchen floor. Soil is the good stuff found outside that makes things grow and makes chickens happy, and often has grit (insoluble stones with rough edges) in it.

    I give my chicks a plug of sod within the first 2 weeks. I live in Maine, where rocks seem to be a primary crop, so... plenty of grit in my soil. I also go into the driveway and shovel up some of the gravel. There are areas where the rain/water flow has removed more of the smaller granules...
