good to know! I have some that is pretty near vinegar now and have thought about adding to see what they think. I've heard some people cut up the old mothers and feed to chickens. Said they go crazy for it. May try.

My flock has been outside in their coop for about 4 weeks. I had a fairly thin layer of litter to begin with. This morning I put down a good layer and they are going crazy scratching and catching bugs! It should be pretty trampled down in an hour or two! What was raked up was all sorts of...

So, I'm sitting in the chicken coop watching the chickens and the rain. I'm so loving the DLM. As you can see, it had trained enough that water is standing in parts of the pen. But most of the pen will be dry, at least on top shortly after the rain stops. And as beekissed mentions in her...

I started a thread about my coop design. Was looking at all these beautiful, elaborate coops. But I just don't think it's necessary and is too much money on something that won't have the ventilation I'll need and would be appropriate for this area. If anyone can give feedback with respect to...

We plan on making a coop and run bigger than we need for many years. Because it will likely be in the barn...

Wow! That is even more awesome. I was hoping to have some nice compost to used when needed. At least I won't have to find someplace to put it until I need it! Love the earthworms. I'd be tempted to throw some red wigglers in there! enola I can't even imagine where I'd sell that around...

Thank you so much! I did watch it while looking though all the DL threads. To be honest, it is what finally convinced me to use this method. Your coop looks so cozy and the chickens look so happy. You make sense with the mimicking the forest floor. We have many acres of planted pines -...

Results from First Year with Deep Litter Method

I have read this entire thread and will definitely be using the deep litter method. I live in the hot, humid South. Near the Gulf Coast. Have read that many litters are used such as pine shavings, leaves, pine straw, etc. My question is this: Can I use mostly pine straw? Will have leaves to...
