Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: You're welcome. Sounds like you did a great job. And, YES, most often it will swell/grow up between the toes just like you posted. In which case, you do have to clean out the swollen area between the toes. There's no way you could have gotten to it going through the pad. If the pad...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: I said I put Neosporin in the hole (regular Neosporin) but that you could also mix some Terramycin with the Neosporin. I think I read that somewhere but I never do that - I just use regular Neosporin and that's not what I meant when I say I don't give anitibiotics - I mean I don't give...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Crack N' Egg : I second Ruth's remark. Her bumblefoot thread allowed me to treat my BR to complete recovery. Ruth is my saviour! Thank you for the kind words. But please don't call me your saviour. Glad to be of help though.

Quote: I've answered your private PM and as I said there, I can't speak for others but my two cents worth is all listed here in this thread. That poor rooster has the worse case I've ever seen and when you are finished digging out the gunk will have huge craters in his feet but they should...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: Cool. I will just keep watching it. I'm not sure I could weave bandages in and around his foot & ankle feathers. Here's the best pic I could find that shows his foot feathers: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/2952_100_6503.jpg OMG - what a beauty. In his case, I'd...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: If there's NO swelling or limping I would leave well enough alone. Could just be a callous. As far as bandaging goes, I don't bandage - I just wrap the foot with vetwrap going between the toes and around the ankle (see photos at beginning of thread). That way the bird can still use...

Kasia - it's always hard to tell from pics just how to advise someone but it sounds like you did the right thing. If there was gunk in the pad it needed to come out and more often than not, that means making a slit in the pad to dig it out. Even if you just pull of the scab and the...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: Ruth, we owe you a debt of gratitude for showing us how it's done. I'm certain I wouldn't have had the confidence to even consider performing this procedure without your instructions. Thanks a MILLION! Glad to be of service. I just want everyone to know that they too can do this...

Quote: Super duper job and I couldn't have described it better myself. Great photos and step by step.

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: If there is swelling between the toes - go through the top of the toe, right down the middle of the most swollen part. Kernels can develop between the toes and not affect the pad at all. It sounds like you got it all out of the pad but it had spread to between the toes. Yea, there...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: I actually got a ton of stuff out when I did hers. Two pretty big size kernels of crap. I looked at her foot earlier and I think there might be a piece way up between two of her toes, so I guess I'm gonna go in through the top this time. Would do it now, but I'm waiting till my dad gets...

Quote: Not really sure. If it healed and there is no swelling she could be limping from something totally unrelated. Check her over and see if you see any sign of injury.

Quote: I posted on your other thread but wanted to copy some of my reply here for others to see/know as well: "For the one between the toes you'll need to dig it all out. There shouldn't be anything there but skin so from the looks of the pics there still "stuff" in there that you will need...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: I always specify the regular Neosporin. Do not use the one with pain relief. You can do it - best of luck. Look at it this way, if you don't, and soon, a severe case can quickly spread and kill her.

Quote: Some of the topical medicines for pain can be toxic/fatal - for example anything with the word "cain" at the end like Benzocain, etc. And, really, I know it's hard to believe but they don't seem to be in any real pain. Mine don't squawk or flinch. If I'm really digging and/or...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: It's really hard to say whether or not you should go deeper. I gauge by how much I got out and how bad the foot looked. I have learned to just make a deep & long slit first go or make a smaller X shape slit over the scab area so that I can dig into the foot. I find it's better to...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

Quote: Congrats on the surgery. There's not always a black plug. Many of the plugs I've pulled out look like a dry kernel of corn. There have been a couple of times where there was no plug, especially if it was a minor case, but in most cases where there was severe swelling, there was a...

Wrap him in a towel with his head completely covered and then lay him on his side. Works wonders with chickens and ducks - I haven't tried a goose though. If it's dark and they can't see, they tend to get really calm. I always operate alone with no one holding the bird and they don't squirm.

Quote: In that case you will need to cut deeply into the pad and try and dig out the nodule. Just follow the steps listed and keep soaking and digging. They are usually much deeper than you would think. Best of luck.
