I have been there for a year of suggestions and not thinking any one is right. You can ask Dawg53 (the worm guy). And they were all right especially Dawg53 and Casportpony, who really hit the nail on the head. Feed. Moisten it for a few days and flick it out with a tooth pick or needle (I...

Yes. That's why I didn't think it was grain impaction. Keep oiling it and work on it bit by bit. My hen would turn blue when I messed with it, so our sessions were short.

I was dabbing olive oil on them and it didn't move and one day I just got fed up and took a toothpick and it just flipped out like a chunk. She's still with me, 6.5 years old. She's not a sturdy healthy hen anymore, sortof weaker and slow, but eats really well, and gets around . I would have...

Well, I believe it turns out to be impacted feed. I got one nostril clean. The problem is she turns blue when I mess with her. So I haven't been working on it. I just keep an eye on her and make sure she's breathing thru her nose. Thanks for asking!

Cluckycharms, just because you're new doesn't mean that you won't have good ideas or answers. I'll run out and put vitamins in their water. I read that the blocked nares usually has an underlying cause that needs to be treated. I'll try that.

I got brave last night and dug a fingernail in and popped one blockage out! Seems like it may have been caused by food, maybe backing up into her nares from the inside. I am still sporadically digging, it's yellow and crumbly and smells. I'm not sure about the other nostril, I picked at it...

Hi Chemguy. Thanks for asking. After topicals and a fungal treatment, it's still there. She hasn't changed, still gasps during naps, otherwise breathes okay, no change. She walks slow, comb is red, and eats normal, and comes for treats. So, I've just been watching her. At least when she's...

Pete, you don't have to thank me! I 've always spent alot of time back with the chickens, learning mostly, and relaxing coffee breaks! If I need to give them a go-over, I do it at night when they've roosted. It's all about learning, right?

Hi Pete, thanks for asking!. I did 5 days of Flagyl. She's the same, may be a slight bit better, maybe. I wish I could get the stuff out of her nostrils, but it seems painful. But she's still a food hog. So, I'll keep you up to date. Karen

Update: I did give one pill of Flagyl, but in doing some reading, I should be giving a pill a day for 5 days. So that will start tomorrow. I'll bet she has it in more than one place.

I have been trying to soften it with cream , and really have to try to soak with warm water and try to pick it out. Maybe do one nostril at a time. I just have a feeling that it goes way beyond the nostrils.

I gave the Flagyl 4-5 days ago and no change. I will be giving her Penicillin shot. If I had to guess, I think that something has been growing perhaps in her respiratory system, like tumors. I'm hoping it was fungus, or pox, but tumors are a possibility. My flock carries Marek's. The hen...

Aside from sinus canker, there's pox that can grow in the trachea, sinuses, etc. It can lay dormant and only come out at times of stress. She's had the mouth breathing during the last 2 summers (hot). Could be a very long molt this past late fall. It can be slow growing and leave scabs, and...

Hi, thanks Pete. She got her flagyl, and nystatin cream on her nostrils. I can't say I notice a change. I picked her up today and she still turns blue. And still mouth breathes, more like gasping when she naps. I'll give her a shot tomorrow. I don't think there's much else to do. She...

Hmmm, isn't that why we give probiotics? The flagyl was only one pill given . I think we get fungal infections because of the good bacteria being killed as well with antibiotics, so we give probiotics. I think!

Thanks for asking, Pete. I just gave her a pill last night (metro.....) for fungus. I think that pill takes 3 days to see improvement. I have nystatin creme to put on her nostrils. Tomorrow I give her a shot of Penicillin. No improvement yet. But the damage on the outside seems to be from...
