I have only experience with the one hen, but would try it and get a water spray to stop aggression ready as you stand guard and see what happens. Be ready to intervene and separate.
Maybe those with more experience will jump in with comments?
That's purrrrrfect!! I am so, so jealous.
I had read RIR "can be aggressive", that's why I don't have any, but a lot of folks comment on how friendly they are.
Bet you're adventure is so much shorter than mine, My Penny is a neurotic, nervous BO.
Looks like you are off to a great start...
IMO you have lot of room to work with, the coop and run look a lot larger than your posted measurements.
@aarts suggestion of an old table or chair is perfect. After Penny reintegrated I was still worried about everything, but removed her cage (former obstacle) I placed an old chair in the...
@Mutt Farm - why not section off an area with temporary fencing to give them room to stretch their wings and keep others away til they get their bearings on the place?
Blooie and aart - I know those were original - at least to me :)
Could you post pic of your set up with the pen you are using?
I used "make shift" removable shelter on Penny's cage so she would have protection from the elements. And a spot to sleep where she felt safe. Took it off in the morning, left the prevalent wind/rain side up most of the time.
IMO...
Sounds like you are off to a good start.
The spray bottle is just a generic one - holds 32 oz of water - it has an adjustable nozzle for jet stream, coarse spray and fine mist and can spray upside down. I use the jet stream and it will spray about 10 feet. I think DH got it at one of the...
@Sydney Acres I have only this one experience with Penny's reintegration and only with chickens. But would think the challenge is the same for turkeys.
If they are always kept apart, they will always fight when together. The traditional look but don't touch separation does help to defuse...
Success !!!!!
Penny went without hesitation to the coop and mounted a roost at sundown yesterday.
I found it interesting that she took her exact old position without even a glance around. Lillie did try a jump to that roost to start some trouble, but misjudged the diagonal jump and landed...
Wish me luck, the gals have been visiting for 3 hours now and only minor pecking order stuff during the first hour. Even took a treat tray in today and only the usual pecking order stuff.
Planning to leave the cage open and see if Penny will try to join them in their coop tonight. Will let...
The water spray idea came from Mutt Farm, before that I was trying shaking a can of marbles - it stopped everyone in their tracks. But the water spray stops only the aggressor and they really hate it. May have to make a holster for the spray bottle so I can keep it close :)
Interesting, maybe your flock are not as spoiled as mine? The main culprit, Lillie, has always been my favorite and used to be the bottom of the pecking order. With the shift in my flock and loss of her favorite buddy - Dottie was #1 and her best friend and protector. IMO she is fearful that...
So sorry about Rosie killing one of her babies, hope the rest of her brood are doing well. Glad it worked out for Lady. And hope you will be able to introduce the little ones without issues.
Wish I had the luxury of being able to let my hens free range and roam, it would be a lot easier.
Throwing in the towel - at least for now.
Let her out of cage 30 minutes after daybreak and things were worse than expected. Lillie and Road Runner attacked at the same time and as soon as I stopped that, the formerly passive Tweedie attacked her with high aggression. Thankful for my water...
