I just had to bury my rooster this afternoon. I could not see any visible signs of an injury. I bought him from Tractor Supply and my boyfriend said that he grew really fast and big. Any insight will be very appreciated!

Is it possible you bought a Cornish X? Those birds are strictly supposed to be raised for meat, because their weight overgrows their bones to a point where butchering is the only humane option.

Was he big and white? He may very well have been a Cornish X - bred for rapid growth they have a host of physical problems and do not live very long for the most part.

Was he a Cornish Cross? They are a meat bird specially bred to grow very big, very fast. They can hit 8 pounds at 6 to 8 weeks old. Without a limited feeding schedule, they can literally eat till they die. They very rarely live past 6 months even when very carefully managed.

They also sell red rangers which would grow big and fast as well, just not as dramatically as the Cornish X.

He was richly colored; beautiful black tail feathers that glistened green in the sun with gold, black, and white throughout his body.
