Hi.

I was wondering if I could worm my chickens, how, and which products are best and available in Australia.

Thanks

Mine free range, and have access to 220 acres, if they could be bothered to walk that far! And their pen is really big.

Thanks. So I don't need to? What if I'm bringing new chicks into the flock?

I've never brought adult chickens into my flock, but my chickens do well even when I buy new chicks or teens to introduce. Opinions vary, but my chickens are strong and healthy and have never been wormed in their life.

Ask veteran chicken keepers near you what they do. Where I live, it is hot and dry in summer and cold and dry in winter, the ground freezes, not sure how deep though. No one I've met (so far, we're kinda new here) worms their chickens. We haven't seen any evidence or signs of worm problems, so we don't worm our flock either. If you live in a hot, humid, moist climate, then worms are going to be more likely of a problem.

Some people worm never, some once a year, some quarterly or more. Depending on the medication used, you may have to toss eggs for 2-4 weeks, as the worm medicine can get passed on through the eggs.

There are no specific medicines for worming chickens. You have to use ones designed for goats or horses, at least that's how it is in the USA.

I use Eprinex pour on for beef and milk cattle. You can eat the eggs the next day as you can eat the meat and drink the milk the next day. Waiting 2 weeks to eat eggs is not done anymore.
!/4 ml is recommended for each chicken put on bare skin back of neck where it hits body. I use a 3 ml syringe minus needle which is for 12 chickens. Don't worry about overdosing as its very forgiving. cost about $41.00 for 500 treatments.
Gets rid of all parasites like lice, mites on chickens, and even good for fleas, worms, ticks on your dog or other farm animals.

There's no withdrawal time for Ivermectin or Eprinex because neither product is approved for use in poultry in the US. I use Ivermectin anyway, and don't eat the eggs for eight to ten days, because I fell better about it that way. I don't have any idea about what's available in Australia, so check there for more help. Maryu
