what to look for when mama duck is caring for hatchlings

update: over a 4 day period, 8 eggs hatched successfully! mama then deserted the last fertile egg, and everyone started spending their days outside.

one duckling didn't make it. i found it yesterday. i have no idea what happened. it was thriving along with its siblings, no signs of trauma, etc.

this morning i went to throw out the last egg, and it is hatching! DAYS after everyone else. it's been in the 90s,so i guess it didn't matter that mama has been off the nest during the day? i am going to keep a close eye on it and hopefully it will join the group successfully. i don't want to pull him to keep him i a brooder alone unless it is absolutely necessary.

in all, this has been a tremendous surprise and a really fun adventure for us. i guess i will sell the little guys once they are fully feathered. until then, cuteness abounds!
thanks for your help everyone.
