I was visiting with my chickens, giving them some treats. They all seem normal except my beta rooster seemed to keep its mouth slightly open as if he were panicking though he seemed calm and ate the treats. I picked him up and held him on my lap and got a close look at his beak. The edges at the joint on one side seem to have dried blood droplets and the bottom half of his beak looked like a minor nail injury. The other side looks perfectly fine.
Also, studying his face on the same side, I noticed a tiny black spot near his eye. I was able to gently attempt a removal (failed and didn't want to risk injury by trying harder.
Are there common beak conditions I should be aware of? Is there a bug or pest that may look like an undersized tick that embeds itself in chickens as ticks do in humans?
Oh, and yes, he demonstrated the ability to comfortably close his beak.
