I purchased 8 pullets beginning of May and as a first time chicken mom I am not confident on sexing my birds. Pretty sure all are indeed pullets except for the larger of my pair of RIR, a little bit of red tinge coming in on the comb/face and is the only one showing any comb color and is definitely the tallest of my birds. Sold as day old chicks but some were at least a week old at purchase time since it was a small volume local feed store.

I learned that chickens are not easy to take pictures of...hope I've got enough for you experienced keepers to help me out. I do want 1 roo but was going to get an Americauna to cover the girls.

Yay! I love seeing pullet ID, have been holding out on getting a roo. I was thinking 8 hens with 1 roo would make a nice small flock for me. I'm going to start looking now, hoping to find a real nice Americauna not too far from the homestead. :)

I wouldn't say close to lay; hens usually start laying at around 4-6 months, or even until the next spring.

Production reds (sold as RIR by hatcheries) develop and lay early. As a pullet gets close to lay her comb will grow and turn red, this can happen several weeks before an egg. OP said bird is close to four months and with several warm months yet to come the bird has plenty of time.
