Where the Orps Jump On You
So I got three chicks from a cage full of random breeds that were straight run. I am pretty sure the striped ones are Barrred Plymouth Rocks, but I am very unsure of their gender. The golden one, I'm sure he's a rooster, but his breed is a mystery. I thought he was a Buff Orpington, but he's much to reddish and dark for that, isn't he? Please give your opinion! These chicks are about 10 weeks old.

This is Yellow...What he was yellow as a chick.

He was the smallest when I first got him and in less than 4 weeks became the biggest. He crows at our neighbor's bantam.

This is Stinker. Yes he/she really is one. My other chick Peeper was too camera shy so I didn't get his/her picture. But he/she is basically the same as Stinker, but with duller-colored legs and beak.

If Yellow crows, Yellow is a boy. As of breed, looks to me like a buff orpington but could also be a Rohode Island Red?

Stinker does look like a Barred Plymouth Rock and as of gender, looks like a male to me. A pic of Peeper would be helpful to tell gender, if his/her comb is the same size and color as Stinker, then Peeper is also a boy.

Yes, both Yellow and Stinker crow quite a bit. Peeper is too similar to Stinker to be a different gender, so I think it's safe to say they're all cockerels. I have had both Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Island Reds, and I don't think Yellow is either. Yesterday I noticed he had dark green iridescent feathers at the base of his tail. Just a couple, but more could come.

Both are definitely roosters. Stinker is a Barred Rock rooster, and Yellow looks identical to several Rhode Island Red/Buff Orpington cross roosters I've hatched over the years, reddish gold with the dark tail feathers. IMO he definitely has Orpington butt fluff going on too, LOL.

Technically, being an Orpington cross, he should have the white legs of an Orpington (white legs are dominant over yellow). But in the very likely scenario where his Orp parent was from a hatchery (vs. a true Orpington breeder) my experience has been that you get lots of leg colors when you cross hatchery Orps with other breeds. I've gotten mostly white, but I've also gotten yellow, willow, and slate too.

He's going to be really pretty when he matures past the teenager phase, I hope you're able to keep him!

Do the crosses have Dark green tail feathers? Yellow does.
