Wonderful, I do have a aquarium heater on hand. Thank you both for the info.

Be careful with the aquarium heater, they are not designed to run dry and the glass ones can fracture if run dry and if in a plastic container they should not contact the bucket as they could melt it... If you look at the one I used, you can see the glass part can't really contact the plastic surface due to the rubber bumper... And last but not least they generally run 70° or more and that can be overkill in many cases, but it's not some huge electricity concern with a 50w heater and small volume of water...

Also avoid the cheap made in China stainless steel aquarium heaters on Ebay, I have tested a few of them and they have all failed in short or worse the seals leaked and electrified the water...

I just skipped the aquarium heater altogether and went with a plastic safe stock tank heater.  Been working great so far through two winters.

I agree it's generally a better option to use a real stock tank heater or bird bath heater... For my proof of concept the $10 for the aquarium heater was a better value, and for my 55 gallon drum, since I did not remove the lid, the heater had to fit throughout the 2" or so cap opening, and for that the only real option was an aquarium heater as well since most stock tank heaters are much bigger... But I didn't go cheap, I purchased a 300w premium stand alone titanium aquarium heater that required an external thermostat for that application so I could dial it down to 45°...

I agree! I have spent countless hours making sure my chickens are drinking clean, poop free water and then they go drink from a slimy bowl of old rainwater! Unless it is horribly contaminated I think it helps build their immunity.

Thanks. After seeing your post I thought about buying the kennel watering cups for dog kennels to attach to the coop wiring. This at least will be a place to catch some rain water.
