A couple questions

I have 2 toms and 1 hen that were born this spring and raised since day olds as 'pets'. They've been raised with 4 chickens, 1 rooster, 6 ducks and 2 geese and have never had any issues. A couple weeks ago we had a coyote attack and kill 3 of the chicken hens, both geese and a duck and wound two other ducks who are healing nicely. The dominant Tom lost a few of his big tail feathers, but otherwise appears untouched. The turkeys have kind of taken over the big goose's job of being the duck protector and are seldom more than a few feet away from the ducks. I play with all of them daily and they all come when called. Today, I laid down out in the yard instead of just sitting and the big Tom puffed up, got all red and started strutting and making noises at me. I flicked him on his beak and sat up and nothing more happened, but what was that all about? Has he decided that I'm somehow a threat if I get right down at duck level?

Also, I have 3 adult hens that I'm going to add back into the flock. Mr. Egg is proving a bit much for his one remaining hen. I'm planning to keep them in a separate cage inside the main chicken coop with everybody and do the introducing carefully, any thoughts or other suggestions? I"m not real worried about my rooster and his hen, but will the turkeys have an issue with a couple new friends being introduced?

Here's a picture of Turkey today when I was laying in the yard. Notice he got between me and the closest ducks.

Since you imprinted the turkeys when they were poults, they do not know the difference between people and turkeys. When you laid on the ground in front of him, he thought you wanted to be bred. He was displaying to try to win your favor before climbing on to breed you. I recommend that you be very careful about getting down on the ground when your toms are around. If one of them decides to "mount" you, you will not enjoy the scratches from their claws.

Since the turkeys are the top of the pecking order they probably won't make much of an issue when the new birds are added. Its the low ones on the pecking order that tend to want to cause trouble with new additions.

Well, that's a bit disturbing. lol. I liked it better when I thought he was just mad at me and protecting the ducks. Usually I just sit out there with them, and there's no issue. I'll stick with that from here out. Thanks for the warning!

I agree with R2Elk. Was just trying to figure out a nice way to tell you your tom is horney!
I usually sit on a lawn chair. They hang out getting their heads scratched.

It's all good. You don't need a 'nice' way to tell me what is real. a little disturbing? yep, more than a little, but our job crew got a huge laugh out of it since they had heard about it prior to me posting here this afternoon. I've actually laughed too, but also taken the information and warning to heart. Turkey Turkey is tucked into his coop for the night with the ducks and other turkeys and I'm going to go lay down.....in my bed, not the yard!

LOL! My friends & coworkers don't quite understand me having turkeys as pets. I keep asking them what other pet fertilizes your yard, trims the grass, then makes you breakfast? They still think I've lost it!
