I have just this evening found one of my hens injured. Her right eye is unable to open and she scratches at it occasionally. Her comb has become very dull. She is not eating or drinking very much. I went out to see her a few minutes ago and finally got close enough to see what looks like a small hole in her head, running along where her head and comb meet.
I cannot be sure and I am going back in right now with my husband's help for pictures. She has been very lethargic and withdrawn from my other girls.
I check on my chickens multiple times a day and this is the first I have seen of her having a problem.
Thank you in advance.

Hi and welcome to BYC. When you can, catch your hen and isolate her from the others. Chickens conceal symptoms of illness and injury for as long as they can, so you are right, she is probably bad off, though not necessarily in agony. Where there's life there's hope. Please let us know as soon as you can what you find, when you examine her more closely. The sooner you can start treatment, the better.

Just got her separated and I am about to upload some pictures. Now that I was able to see her closely I think they might be pecking wounds? Thank you very much for responding.

That might be dry pox too.. or wet pox. .I've never had an experience with that, but others have if you search it on here. The fact that she's not eating and drinking well makes me think there's something else going on besides just peck wounds. Check out the inside of her mouth and see it looks normal. She looks ill, which means she is, as chickens tend to conceal their symptoms for a while until they can't hide them anymore. So it's important to address quickly, and also keep her separated from the flock, until she recovers. Coax her to eat by giving her special goodies....applesauce mixed with crumbles or small bread balls soaked in buttermilk, are two treats I've had success getting sick chickens to eat. Plus the buttermilk gives them some probiotics and fluids. Scrambled eggs are a treat, too. If you research pox in the search bar of this forum, you'll come up with lots of info. Please keep us posted, good luck.
