Hello all,

I'm new to this site and am really wanting to get some chickens for myself. I have experience assisting some sustainable farmers who raise chickens and sell at farmers markets, and so I would really like to build a coop very similar, or exactly like, this coop here so I can have some chickens in my own backyard! I can probably figure it out with quite a bit of work myself, but does anyone happen to have plans to build this coop?

Thanks in advance!

Go way bigger!
Think long term goals.

Are you in ChiTown?
Winter can be brutal with too small a coop.

2 great articles on Space and Ventilation in my signature....good place to start to learn about good housing.

aart,

Thanks for the links in the thread, I've skimmed them, and will read more in depth soon. I am about 60 miles west of Chicago, but similar weather. My town limits me technically to 3 chickens (though I know plenty of people with more than 3) and my backyard isn't *that* big. I was going to make the run a bit bigger, but plan on having the chickens in my fenced in backyard most of the daytime hours, so the run size isn't that big of a deal. The coop itself can be a bit bigger, but I don't think much bigger than 4' x 4' is doable, and I want something that is moveable. Like I said, similar but not the same is okay, but that is the concept I'm going for. With 3 to 5 absolute max, I wouldn't think I would need any larger than 4' x 4' I wouldn't think?

Thanks for the advice so far!

Matt

Even with only 3 chickens I would definitely make it bigger than that. Keep searching through google. It's hard to find free plans, you can also check youtube to see what you can find. I built my own, but I live in the country in NC now so I was able to build a fairly decent one (which I still plan to add on to). I'm from Illinois :)

Purina at one time had a plan for a 4x4 coop, but I haven't found it lately. 3 sheets of plywood and some 2x4's. It could work if you limit yourself to 3 chickens. Elevated a couple get off the ground it provides some sheltered outside area.
