Weird Egg??

How old are birds and how long have they been laying?
Not common but not unprecedented, new layers can lay some pretty funky eggs in the first month or so.
Check out  this weird egg thread...and post your pic there too.

Exactly what and how are you feeding?
There shouldn't be oyster shell in the feed, might be calcium in there tho.

They are 1-2 years old, I bought them from a gal who was rehoming her flock and she had quite a few chickens so she couldn't say for sure how old the ones I got were. I got them in March and they were laying already.

I feed Scratch and Peck non-gmo layer feed which looks like there are in fact pieces of oyster shell in it?? And then I offer oyster shell separately

Quote: You'd have to look at the label for ingredients to see if it has shells in it and what the calcium levels are.

ETA: what is the protein level in your feed...and are you feeding any other foods or 'treats'?

It is an egg that did not get much shell while inside the hen's body. Often there will not be any shell at all, only a rubbery membrane. I have oyster shells in my chicken coop free choice and I still get an occasional membrane egg, though I don't get as many as I used to before I offered calcium . Not sure what the tail thing is.

I'm wondering if there isn't something internal with a couple of my hens because the shells sometimes seem thin and break easily, also the yolks break easily (guess I said all that above lol) Anyway, not much I can do about it I guess if there is something internal going on? The eggs are still good, we eat them :)

Also, I was using like an actual oyster shell supplement and then ran out so I went to our local farm store and all they had for oyster shell was what looked like white grit, so I got that. I wonder if it's not as good of quality as the "real looking" stuff? I'm ordering more of that today

Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it. Your hens clearly aren’t getting enough calcium. Offering more oyster shells might help some but it could be that some of your hens just don’t want to eat it. Some of my hens refuse to eat oyster shells and have always laid soft shelled eggs

That's a good perspective :) I can only offer it, can't make them eat it. I won't worry about it ;)

Hello,
I just found an egg exactly like the one you posted! I was wondering if you ever discovered a reason? Are your hens still healthy?
Thank you!
Deb

I bought 2 more b/rocks@ 8 mos. I discovered that fart egg . Weird
