Cream Legbar Egg Color

Well, I'm disappointed so far. Bought a small flock from GFF and so far, 3 of the 5 hens are laying green to olive green eggs and SMALL - just 40g Wow.

I know according to UK standards, unless I'm missing something here, that Cream Legbar eggs can be blue, green, or olive.

Was really hoping for some blue. Hopefully at least 1 of the 2 hens left will lay a blue.

Yes as you said egg colours can vary in this breed, you could try breeding these hens to a white or preferably blue egg layer to try and get bluer eggs, if that is your goal (not breeding to standard etc)

It's sad enough the eggs are not blue at all, but the egg size is so small. Hopefully the eggs will get to be at least medium size, or I will be selling this pricey flock.

I'm aware of a site that sells CLB hatching eggs that are blue. I'm thinking I can then be certain any hens that hatch will lay blue eggs, correct?

Mine lay green eggs too. I was really disappointed. But, fortunately I didn't have to pay for mine. If I paid GFF prices, I would simply be ballistic. Don't worry the egg size will get bigger and they are fantastic layers. I am some what disappointed that the breeders still insist on advertising the breed as being BLUE egg layers.

So glad to hear the egg size will get bigger.

I too am disappointed that breeders insist on advertising them as blue egg layers.

The only thing I can think of is that if the breeder weeded out it's green layers, then perhaps it's safe to say that theirs will lay only blue as well as the hatchlings.

Good thing you didn't have to pay for yours

On the plus side for us, we didn't pay the top dollar amount GFF was originally asking, but still $29/chick is a lot more than I normally pay for chicks. Would love an Ayam Cemani, but $199/chick NO way!

As Enola said, the eggs will get bigger. Young pullets lay smaller eggs when they start laying, as they get older, the egg size increases. My spring chicks started laying and they are small too.

Hi ~ i too purchased some CLB's from GFF in March. They did start with small eggs, but within one and ahalf weeks were laying a much larger egg. Not sure the comparison,
but larger than my Maran hen? I have an Isbar from GFF's also and her egg is green and when you put the two together my Legbar is definately a blue. I am really happy
with my flock of Legbars. Very sweet natured, too.

Yes, mine are sweet natured, too. Curious chickens, great foragers, no pecking when I check under them, and no need to replenish their feeders very often. They have good attributes. The reason I purchased them is for blue eggs. Their website at the time of purchase stated they lay blue to light green eggs. 4 out of the 5 hens I purchased lay olive green eggs. The 5th one lays a near light green colored. NONE are blue! Wow! The 4 layers are significantly darker green than my Easter Egger who lays light green. I sent GFF a picture showing the difference. The owner does not want to acknowledge their false advertising. I would not have gotten these chickens had I known they would lay olive green eggs.
What I've learned the hard way: since the hens they imported are from Rees's line - UK standard - the eggs can be blue, green, or olive. I should have investigated more. My bad. Hopefully, GFF will update their website with accurate info, and not lead others astray.

I will send you a pic of my Legbar eggs compared to the Isbar. Mine is also Rees line. My batch was from March. How about yours?

Maybe my perception of color is off? But you can hopefully compare with the color you are getting.

Well, the good news is there's a craze for Olive Eggers right now, so if you're so inclined you can sell these hens and recoup some of your costs, putting that money toward true blue eggers.
