I took her to a vet. He said that it does not look like a break or a sprain, more of a infection issue. There is no bumble to see just lots of swelling. Left alone it could kill her, it may not. its a crap shoot. But it is more likely to kill her left untreated.
The topical salve he offered to treat her with would make her eggs and meat un-consumable forevermore (according to the FDA) and because she is around my other ducks it would make them and their eggs also non-food. That's not going to work for me.
Furthermore, her oil gland does not work. That is why she is so stringy looking and does not float well. She is not waterproof. This will make it almost impossible for her to weather a Utah winter.
He did say the Antibiotic I put her on is fine, but hard to treat an issue in the extremities with oral antibiotics. But it could work- given time. The problem is...she still will not be able to keep warm this winter. He said there is nothing we can do for her oil gland.
We have been blessed with a warm fall here so far. I Think I have made up my mind to stop treatment of antibiotics, try to make her comfortable till they are out of her system. And send her to freezer camp before Halloween. Its a hard decision. but I think its best.
Thank you for all of your help and support along the way.
