first time incubation questions

I purchased eggs from a gentleman in my town. So far I have 28 that are developing. Today is day number 17. I looked at my eggs this morning with a candle to make sure that progress was being made before I put them on lock down tomorrow. It seems that some of the eggs are so full you can barely see anything and others have a lot of space left. The man I purchased my eggs from assured me that they were all laid on the same day. Is it normal for some of the chicks to be much smaller than others?
 
What kind of incubator? How have your temperatures been? How has your humidity been? Are they all the same kind of chicks? How do the air cells look?
 
it is a hover Bator 1602 n still air. I borrowed this from a friend. The temperature is staying right at 100 degrees and humidity is fine. The chickens that lay the egg are a mix between black sex link and unsure which rooster. I have been marking the air cells and they seem to be growing but the top portion of the egg is very dark on some of them but on others I can still see plenty of space. This is my first time incubating and I just want to make sure that I'm doing everything ok.
 
I asked about the bator because some are known to have hot spots and cold spots. The 1602 has a decent reputation, but its still possible that you have areas that are warmer/cooler, which would affect development rate. You might try moving a thermometer around just to see. I also asked about breed because they can develop at different rates too.

The fuller eggs will probably hatch first, the others may be a little behind, and may come out a little sticky, but should be fine.
 
thank you so much for the information! I am so excited and cannot wait for Friday to get here which is when they should be hatching. It's going to absolutely kill me to put them on lock down tomorrow lol. I'm sure I will just be staring through the glass for the next several days.

WVduckchick, you must be a "Chickaholic" like me, LOL. I love watching the chicks hatch. This year my DW had to tell me to stop hatching eggs in the incubator. I still sneaked a couple of eggs under a hen. Here are my last babies for the year, they are now 2 weeks old.

I suppose you could call me that and be accurate :D Adorable babies! What are they? And what's the hen? She looks like my black split lav orpington.
 
The hen is a Cubalaya, the babies are Heinz57. Dad is American game but moms could be Australorpe, EE, BR, RIR, Brahma, or American game. I really don't know, I have a mixed flock that free range.

Very pretty! So you get nice surprises on hatch days!!

Here's my latest group:
Golden sebrights, silver duckwing OEGB's, and the little yellow one on the left is my lone surviving black tail buff Japanese.
