Puffy/Swollen Eye

Okay!! Thanks! I'll work on making the electrolyte water. Should i just provide this electrolyte water or regular water as well?

The eye ointment sounds like it may have dexamethasone in it which is a steroid that might not be so good for the eye. Saline solution can be made with 1 teaspoonful of salt added to a quart of water, and boiled at a low simmer for 15 minutes, then cooled to room temperature. Flushing the eye with saline, and applying Vetericyn eye gel or Terramycin ointment may help. You may be dealing with MG since there is swelling of the eyelids, but E.coli or other bacteria can also be a problem. Testing can be done to pinpoint the disease. The Tylan 50 should treat the symptoms, but MG and most respiratory diseases can leave the flock as carriers for life. MG is a chronic disease and can come back when there is stress such as winter cold, molting, or other stress.

Yes I would give the Tylan 50.

Vetericyn Eye Gel is applied to the eyes only. The Vetericyn eye wash could be used, but the Vetericyn spray gel is only for wounds, not the eyes. Here is a link about the gel:

Okay thank you! So far ive given her 3 doses of Tylan 50 and her swelling has gone down! Last night her eye was only a little slit and her other eye was wide open. This morning i checked her and gave her the Electrolyte water, the swelling has gone down alot on her eye lids so that now she can have it open fully! And the swelling around her eye i believe deminished a little so i think the Tylan is working!

thanks for the electrolyte recipe. my girl has the area around one eye very swollen as well. i've put her in the garage "infirmary" and am giving her eye drops 2x/day ~ neomycin and polymyxin B sulfates and Dexamethasone opthalmic suspension. what a mouthful! it is for steroid response inflammatory ocular conditions. had it when my cat had an issue. it's all i have in the house/barn, so giving it a shake. Tylan 50 is on hand if anything else pops up.
