And me too!

Really? Thank you.
Hi, sorry to gate crash this thread but I wondered if anyone had any advice... I recieved my duck eggs after being shipped yesterday I rested them for 24 hours, I candles them and some appeared to have detached air cells, I don't think they are completely detached as I can't move them right round the egg but they move around the darker area. Should I incubate them and not turn them for a few days?

They should just be incubated up right, and not turned for a few days as you said.

Oh don't worry you'll get updates! :)
This thread is insane...I can't keep up with you all! Ha ha!

But, why? :D

Expected Hatch Rate
Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched, or even after for that matter!
Shipped eggs have a MUCH lower hatch rate.
The percent hatchability in the commercial poultry industry ranges from 78-88%.

Looks like saddled air cells, yes, don't turn them for 2ish days. Sadly, the top one looks scrambled..... But set it anyway and see what happens. Liz is getting more info for you.

Asking incubation questions is not crashing the thread. It's what it here for. As other have said. Incubate them and don't turn for a couple days.

oh lol thats ok Benny

question for you, is it true that using a garden hose to fill waterers is really bad for chickens and they use some lead to make the brass nozzels and such? Do the associated toxins such as the bisphenol A plastics, harm chickens and in turn us? There was a discussion on FB and someone posted that the levels are 20% above what is safe for drinking???
Garden_hose.jpg
It is a problem.
I researched it for the last few months and decided to replace all my hoses used for anything like chicken water and gardening.
I bought three drinking water safe 50' hoses online from HD thinking they'd make it out to the water barrels that supply chicken water. I also bought 3 to get free shipping. I was short. I went to Lowe's to get a 25' one to make it long enough. They had a single 100' one but couldn't find a price. Turns out it was a non-stock item. I told the young man I was struggling with whether to buy the 25' one or the 100' that was only $10 more. He marked it down for me.
Now I have 250' of drinking water safe hoses. And another 250 or so of the commercial heavy duty hoses.

I don't know for sure, I should check but l know this:
1. The bisphenol A emissions is dependent on the water temperature as they are hoter mor emissions.
And because the water in the hose is cold I dont see any problems there. IMO the plastic container that stay full of water in hot dayes outside can be a bigger problem
2. Abaout the nuzzle if it made from brass it should mot have any led in it so dont see the problem, but if we assume that the alloyed is contaminated with led, it is in neglected amount, and especially becous the water rush trough it and dont set for long time like the situation could be if the water tubing were made of led.

...

My hoses get really hot during the day dont yours? ok and I saw no links I didnt google it either, just so many agreed with it I thought I would ask.

...
My hoses have always been under pressure in all but freezing weather so stuff has been leaching into them for years.
In order to get cold water out I'd have to run them a long time.
Depending on the type of hose, lead, phthalates, BPA, antimony, brominated flame retardants, tin stabilizers and hazardous metals can leach into the water. Some of those like phthalates are not chemically bound to the hose so can continue to leach even after flushing with cool water.
Water sitting in a hot hose for 2 days has up to 9 times the BPA and twice the phthalate DEHP considered safe.
Here's some results of several studies.

Tried to find in Google scholar didn't find anything, yes they do but I never let it stay full of water, I always close the tap, to be on the safe side let the water flow for 30 seconds before you fill the waterers
My runs are so long, I have to flush for several minutes to get fresh water.

I run the hose till the water is cold, because the chickens like cool water.... So I guess I have been doing whats recommended without even trying!
that helps

No need to be terrified. If you flush the hose until the water is cold, most of the contaminants that have leeched out of the hose have been removed. As the hose cools, it releases fewer and fewer chemicals into the water. Never drink water that has been heated in a hose or plastic bottle, and never give it to your birds, either.

Good advice.
It won't be good for the birds but also ends up in the eggs and meat.

Where is Pensmaster? And didn't I see Chicken Canoe? Yes. I remember saying good morning to him. Where did he go?
Good Morning. I was here earlier and responding to stuff written last night. By the time I got around to answering most, I was well over another 100 posts behind so I just scrapped the whole thing.
Nice waste of a good morning.
Most were about your duck meat.

Float away into the horizon on its canoe........
I wish.

Hi everyone, I was wondering if someone could help me. I have been redirected here from the baby chick pictures forum as I have a problem with one of my latest hatchings. This poor little thing doesn't seem to be able to stand up at all. I took it to the vet this morning and they've said it is a developmental problem. It can sit up for so long, but then it will fall over and roll on to its back, unable to get up. Also it's head keeps lolling to one side. It can't stand up at all, doesn't seem to have the strength in its legs. I thought maybe it could be some form of splay leg? Or maybe even a vitamin deficiency? Any advise/help would be great. One the bottom picture it's the one that is sat funny with its legs out in front of it...as you probably will have already guessed. Thanks!
It is not splay leg. I had one like that earlier this year. It didn't make it cause it couldn't walk, eat or drink.
If you want to try, you could give it some vitamins but I wouldn't hold out much hope.

question on vent holes, When do you remove the plugs?
Some keep them out. I keep one out all the time and remove the second one at the end of the first week.
I lost my instructions though.
The embryos benefit from a little higher carbon dioxide initially but need more oxygen for most of the incubation.

Any ideas as to how I can help it? Or do you think that it's not long for this world...like the vet said? Thanks
I'm with the vet.

I just herd that was some shouting in Washington in a military base?

All clear.

Troops on Andrews AFB were holding an exercise with long guns which someone saw and panicked reporting it as a possible shooting.
