The broodies beat me up, but the six active chicks are in with them. It took a minute for them to stop screaming at me, but I heard (and dared to peek) them clucking, and all seemed okay.

Omg they are adorbs!!!! Such a cute pic in the bus.

This is the brooder I built, 3x6, will easily hold 30 chicks until about 3-4 weeks, after which it gets a little bit crowded. I like that I can see all of them, and reach any of them, and they are at eye level. I can also divide it if needed (like here, when I divided it with a screen panel I built until the brand new chicks got oriented before merging with the older ones). I was thinking of building a second one and maybe a third (gotta find a place to park them, though).

I love that about your setup. Having them at eye level and the great ventilation.
I've thought about doing that but if mine are indoors, they're never inside that long.

Remind me again what breed(s)? Gotta agree, the toy bus photo is too cute... - Ant Farm
Silver Pencil Rock. Thank you.

They aren't really "indoors" here - they're in a mudroom (I don't have a barn, shed, or garage, so this is the best I've got...). I really liked it for brooding - moved them fully outdoors into tractors at 4 weeks. I left it set up (though cleaned it out), and it has turned out to be a wonderful isolation/quarantine/injury pen for adult chickens as well, ready at a moment's notice. Have used it at least three times for that. Here's Puppy in it (she got into a paddock that wasn't hers and started shoving around the hens, ticking off their very protective rooster. So she had a couple wounds that needed to heal indoors away from flies for a few days).

Exactly the setup everyone needs. An immediate quarantine quarter.

I've used my breeder pens for broodies, quarantine, chicks, etc..
