Aw that's a bummer. I think the winter thing is doable with the right set up. It gets darn cold here too but so far my 2 weekers are happy and doing just fine out in the coop. That's kinda why we were considering hatching again for New Years. That said, I don't know if I will have any eggs for the HAL. Ive got an 8 month old young roo and my last set yielded 1 chick

Not sure if I should try again with my own or roll the dice on pricey shipped eggs.
Just be careful. The hatch before this last one, I had my 3 chicks outside in a wood sided brooder up near the house. They had a heating pad "momma" that I thought was working real well. It was an older one without the automatic shut off. The problem was that it was so cold they didn't want to come out from under "her" to eat & drink. My hubby said he thought they needed a heat light in there as well, I didn't think so. Then 1 of the chicks died. It was over by the water dish, they food I had put right up near "momma heating pad hoop" so they could eat without coming all the way out.
Anyway, I think maybe my hubby was correct & they needed both (being outside) & the one chick just got too cold when going out to get a drink.
It could have been other causes, but it wasn't anything apparent.
I added a heat lamp & after just a week or so they gave up on "Momma" and choose the heat lamp instead. I haven't lost either of the other 2 & that was about a month (or 2) ago.

unless he is here.

Bubbles, I'm holding off on hatching. Not because of nature but because it just makes more sense for me. I can't afford to buy shipped eggs. I rushed for the Halloween hatch and ended up with only 2 chicks out of 24 set. I can only afford to wait for my cockerels and hens and pullets to get it going and hatch in February.

Brat, can you lower the temp? I agree with others about getting humidity up by getting warm water in there- maybe closer to the edges- away from the eggs.

I had to go tell Granny that I think i killed red,  he aint comin out of the message he dont respond back no more I think I killed him :th
He's hunting this morning Sally & if his pm works like mine does, he may not know he got a message. Mine in cantankerous, sometimes it alerts, but most of the time not.

Very sorry to hear that :-( glad to hear that the other 2 have been ok. I appreciate you sharing that with us because it is important to consider that these things could happen despite our best efforts.
