I have two problems. I'm on day 30 of my hatch and one duck has made no progress. I candled it today and seen she's pointed the wrong way. Do I need to help her? If so what should I do? This is my first time hatching.. My 2nd problem is I had two pekins hatch last night. The first baby is trying to walk but its neck is twisted and it looks up. The 2nd baby is laying like it did while still in the egg.. Is this normal?? I'm I doing something wrong?

I'm so sad! The baby that was turned backwards died. Now I wish I would of done more to help it. I was hoping that one would make it because it was the 1st egg my duck had laid. :(

Oh, no,

I am not a hatcher, but I can tell you that twisted neck can often be fixed completely by starting the duckling on B vitamin supplements. You can get B Complex capsules and add them to the drinking water. Use the amount of B3 (niacin) in the capsule to know dosage - 150 mg niacin per gallon of drinking water. Keep it up for ten weeks or so.

Take a look at Bentley's story. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/761308/peking-duckling-with-crooked-neck-help

Sometimes the ducklings need quite a while to rest and recover after hatching.

Sad you lost the little one. It is so difficult to know if and when to intervene…hatching can be heartbreaking. Are there any others yet to hatch?

Also, sometimes the first eggs a duck lays do have more problems. So at this point, Get some B complex in the water - it will not harm the other one - and make sure you have the hatchlings in a good clean, warm place. Have you seen this?

Thank you! I got niacin and enfamil poly-Vi-Sol to give him. I read its should be without iron. I live in a small town, I went to every store and could only find the enfamil with iron. Will the iron hurt my baby? I got some but I'm scared it will hurt him. Yes I have 6 that will go into lock down on Sunday and another batch the following weekend. Can anyone tell me why my ducks and chicks are having a really hard time breaking through there shells? I have the humidity between 55 and 60.. I live in south Texas.I'll check out those websites now.

Can you get a B-Complex capsule? Drugstores usually carry something like that. Maybe that's what you meant when you wrote niacin.

@casportpony any ideas? @Miss Lydia or @needlessjunk ?

@caesargirl AND @WVduckchick would be 2 more that can help with hatching problems..

I let my ducks do the hatching for me...

So sorry you lost a lil one..

What kind of ducks? And incubator details would help. Still-air or fan? Have you done any misting throughout incubation? Have you verified the accuracy of your thermometer and hygrometer?
Did you incubate with the eggs standing fat end up, or laying down?

Very sorry you lost one, but the rest can still make it.
