I got 2 new chickens recently. They are of laying age. Between the 3 chickens I have, there are 2 nesting boxes, so the ladies aren't cramped for laying space. I've found eggs twice in the nesting box. But I keep finding cracked eggs under their perch. So I'm guessing one of them is dropping eggs at night. Is that something that happens? What can I do about it? Today I found the egg whites alone, as it looks like they ate the shell and yolk for the first time. I need to break this habit! Advice?

Try to separate the hens from the space under the roost so they won't get the habit of eating eggs (which is really hard to break). Also you could try putting false eggs (or even a golf ball) in the nest to entice them to lay there more. They may not be necessarily dropping the eggs at night. They may just be laying the eggs there. You may want to increase calcium in the flock to harden their eggshells. Hope this helps. :)

I'm pretty sure she's dropping them from the perch. They're usually cracked at one end, not totally shattered. The eggs wouldn't break if they were laid under the perch because there is a layer of pine litter on top of the concrete. I agree I need to keep them from eating the broken eggs, but the way my coop is designed I'm not really able to block the area under the perch off.
