My two hens are now molting and since this began they are barely eating from what I can tell?? Also the roost, which normally is covered in poop from all night, is now nearly clean?? No poop even?? There IS poop out on the run and everything as usual but not in the roost where they've slept all night?? They are acting normal.. walking around and such. Also they WILL eat OTHER things such as lettuce, cheese etc etc if I give it to them and EAGERLY TOO????!!!! It's just it seems that they don't want to eat their feed anymore?? We did even go buy another different kind of feed in case there happened to be something in the other one or something? But it's made no difference at all they still are eating very little of it. I've always made them a sort of wet mash out of their own feed by adding water and then adding either canned corn, carrots, green beans etc etc and they have always just LOVED this and they eat the entire bowl I make them daily AND I also put a small amount of a supplement called Kickin Chicken in that as well. Now since this molt began, they will eat it on some days, but on many days they will just pick out the veggies and leave the wet feed?? It's just sooooooo very strange and I'm very concerned. Can anyone help me with any insight as to WHY this may be happening?? Thank you sooooooo much for any help you can give me with this.

A few weeks ago my wife started preparing a veggie/leftover mix for our chickens. Since then they are eating less of the feed. If your hens are active with no symptoms other than being picky eaters, don't worry. Certainly, keep an eye on them and watch for other symptoms of disease. Consider giving less other…so the hens eat the feed that has the right nutrition, but otherwise, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

This fall especially during my hens' yearly molt, they have not eaten well. Finally I got some 24% game bird chick starter, and gave them that so they would get some extra protein. They are eating that a little better, but I think it can be normal for the decreased appetite during a molt. Of course, if I throw out some scratch grains, then start diving for that, LOL.
