Help me please!!!!! My baby duckies keep laying on their backs while they're outside in the run and nearly dying!!!! A couple of the duckies have done this a couple days in a row now!!!! They're about 5 weeks old and I've been letting them out in the run everyday with a small tub of water that they can get into and stand up in. I leave it in there all day but I make sure it's warm and I check on them often. Just yesterday, two of the duckies were laying on their backs again so we brought them inside and put them in a towel and waited to see if they were alright. They were very quiet and just sat there (usually they peep really loud when we bring them inside.) After a few minutes, one of them started flapping his wings and pulling his head straight to his back really slowly and struggling for air. We were freaking out not knowing what to do. My Mom started slapping him and rubbing his neck because that's the natural thing to do. It turns out that that saved his life yesterday. We kept them in for a little bit and they kept doing these big watery poops. They were back to their normal selves and peeping loudly again, so we put all the duckies in their night time cage and didn't give them any food or water until later. Today I decided to let the swimming water be available only for a half hour. I had already taken the swimming water out and went in to eat. I happened to look out the window and see one of the duckies on her back. I rushed outside, flew the run door open, and dove in there. I thought I was to late, her eyes were distant, her body was completely stiff, but I kept slapping her. You can imagine me crying and freaking out, my hands were shaking, I was asking God for help, I was trying to make sure the other ducks and chickens didn't escape while I'm trying to slap the life into this little ducky. After a minute of all that, she finally blinks. I brought her inside and held her, my hands are still shaking, and she sits there quietly. She's probably done like 10 watery poops since I've been holding her. She was acting like she was hot, so we put her back in the run with the others and she's happily doing what ducks do. I don't know if they are getting water logged, or eating stuff they shouldn't and choking on it. The tub has been available for like 2 weeks now and they're all of the sudden acting like this the last few days, so I don't know what the problem is. @Miss Lydia, I know you're good at medical stuff for birds, what do you think is wrong with my little duckies? Thank you guys for any information, if this happens again I might have a heart attack even though I'm not old enough for one!

@DestinyIke What part of the world are you in? at 5 weeks if they aren't feathered in completely they can chill if left in cold water, What are you feeding them? are you giving them any kind of vitamin supplements Did you give them any niacin when they were little? or Brewers yeast? I'm not that good at medical stuff trust me. I am trying my best to figure this out . What all is in your run like is there anything they could be eating that wouldn't be good for them? it almost makes me think there is a nutritional def going on for most of them to be acting like this, But first tell us how many ducklings you have and how many are doing this and is it the same ones every time?

I can imagine how scary that was to see thankfully both times you have been able to bring them out of it makes me think again some type of seizure.. Which a vit def can also bring on..
Lets see if @Amiga or @casportpony have any ideas.

Are they Runners?

I have 11 ducks and they eat Dumor chick starter grower that's for ducklings, chicks, and other birds. We feed it to the ducklings, and baby chickens. The food has really good vitamins and stuff that they need. I havn't given them any extra vitamins. The water I put in the run has always been warm, and I only put it in there when the sun is out. They were only in the water for like 20 minutes today. My ducklings are Welsh Harlequins, and they eat everything! There's lots of little acorns and stuff in the grass, but I've moved the run since then to a spot where there aren't any, but the same thing happened anyways. They drink a LOT of water, too much I think, because the ones that were on their backs that really scared us were pooping out pure water, it didn't even look like poop. After they poop out the water they're back to normal. I don't give them water at night because they make such a big mess, so I think they're just overly thirsty in the morning and they drink way too much. I'm not sure if it is the same ducklings every time because there's 11 of them

At 5 weeks old they should be able to go all night with out water mine did and most stop giving food and water over night your taking up food to right not just water? They cannot eat feed with out water.
Water is very important for them to wash down their feed. and to wash out their nares while eating.

I have been keeping their food in the cage at night without water because I read that they need food 24/7 and that they don't need water at night......... I'll just take both out from now on. that's what I did last night and none of the duckies were on their backs today, but I didn't let them out in the run or let them swim today either. We went and got a nutrition supplement, and probiotic for their water:

400

400

Here's the nutrition label on the food they're eating:

400

If there isn't enough niacin in their food, where's the best place to get it?

Definitely remove the food too. They can choke if they don't have water to wash down their food especially if feeding crumbles. So no more food and water at night.

You can have food and water at night but the reason people take both out is because the ducks also play in the water during the night and make a BIG mess by morning.

Okay so now we're all on the same page no food and water at night. Nutri drench is awesome stuff start them on that and switch off an on on the vitamins Nutri drench one day save a chick another. and always make sure when you do give them water they have a bowl deep enough to wash out their nares. I really like Nutri drench I'm not sure if I'd use both at the same time though you don't want to OD them on too many vitamins. Are you using any other form of B3>plain niacin or Brewers yeast? Maybe switch off and on with the ND and save a chick .

They're not on any niacin or Brewers yeast. Their food has a niacin supplement in it, but if that isn't enough, where's the best place to get it? We didn't see any at Tractor Supply. Would extra niacin be too much for the chickens? Because they eat the same food. They're doing really good today, I let them out into the run to play. I just noticed that one of the boys keeps chasing after the girls and biting them, of coarse he has his favorite LOL.
