It doesn't sound like you're bad mouthing him at all. Just pointing out breeding goal differences. I'd prefer to get poults, but I really don't need 15 and don't know of anyone else interested in Turkeys at the moment. I'd also get different breeds if I got poults from Porter's. Eggs are obviously limited.

Do you have an incubator?

If you want to just wait until you get a broody I could get you eggs or Holm's I am sure. Also Coffee will have eggs she has some of my "colored" birds I did not want and wants some more hens for Porter. I don't recall what he is but he is a sandy colored slate of some kind, She has a blue hen now, I have a white and maybe palm for her. or whatever she wants. she will be letting Porter breed to them, no other toms, so they will be colored for sure.

Between us we can get you eggs I am sure, she is not NPIP if that matters to you..

It is not much better in the Banana Belt, the ice is 4-6 inches thick between my house and the coop, it is a tricky proposition every day...

We live in St. Paul proper, we have a small coop with run, indoor square footage will be about 12 square feet so my little coop will allow me to have 3 birds. I have the paperwork, just need to finish building (which well its too cold for that right now).

But here comes the fun part, after all that I have 0 idea how to actually get hens, know they are hens, and have any idea if they will work for us. Houle's seems to be a place I could get them but I have a few questions.

Does anyone know of anyone in the twin cities that might sell sexed Batam chicks? And 2 if I couldn't get batam are there other birds that are hardy but little with some tolerance for children?
My girls love to let them free range when we are outside, but they will have to be put back in teh run and coop when we are indoors (can you say stray cats?) And when should I start looking to order or anything?

Or if you all can just direct me to the best beginner in the city in cold weather thread that would be awesome too.

For the record this is our boy (who lives on a farm south of the cities now) that we miss and started this whole thing.

Welcome to the thread, he looks like a nice boy! I don't know anything about bantums, I only have a small flock of big girls (5). BantiesRule might? lol I agree though, try and find small combs, pea, cushion, or rose comb. I think you may be able to get bantums at anoka/ramsey farm and garden as well, I know he will take back roosters if you accidentally get one. you'd have to call and ask though.

That's it, I am offering a rooster trading service with my chicks ( for a slightly higher fee)... The incinerator runs a lot during chick time anyways, what's another bird in it?

I just did a candle of the first hatch for the 10th, NOT good.

I have 9 toad eggs hatching and 3 maybes. (read no ways)
I have one PC egg that is in the maybe pile the rest were blanks. I had this problem with ED last year, I think I will be changing roosters for a while. Maybe Ed could become a companion bird. I did not trim his feathers or the hens, as it just seems too cold to trim feathers. Maybe I will move Weinerhead into the hens (his mother and aunt) cage. and put Ed with the pullets ( his daughters)


I have one CLB egg hatching and one maybe. 2 SS eggs and 1 maybe

and 1 maybe Yokohama egg.

First hatches are so bad......


On the good side, the incubator I got from EJB is running like a dream. The front wafer is bad, I found that out the end of last season, but it is holding 99.5 exactly and has 45% humidity. I am happy. I was going to put an electronic thermostat in but I might just change the front wafer it is running so good. Way better than the new ones I got with the electronic thermostats in them.

I am going to set eggs tomorrow for the 21st. I have around 5 dozen to set.

Maybe I'll just wait for some eggs from you guys. Since Holms lives in Alaska, I may depend on you and Coffee. Where has Coffee been?

I didn't even think of Anoka/Ramsey Farm & Garden! Yes, they'll start getting chicks in January. I know they have pullets and older chicks right now.
