Surviving Minnesota!

Cluckies that looks like a good recipe for the pickled northern as well. Our neighbor....my good friend's mother...made us a batch with the Silver Satin or Wine or what have you. The fish has a different consistency than my Dad's. it gelled more or something. Where as my Dad's still has a meat like texture...or herring texture. The Silver Satin batch just has a softer...gelatinous texture to me. I'm prejudiced too...and grew up on Dad's recipe.

Even herring do not taste like herring should.

The gold standard was "Day Herring" they made them in Day, Minnesota.

Now there is a town a lot of you will not know existed. But Day Herring company sold to another company and the herring are made somewhere else and taste like excrement now, when compared to the old ones.

So I truly am a man in search of a good pickled fish.

The recipes will make a difference in the fish. My husband loves pickled fish. Herring, pickled northern... He is a bit of a connoisseur as well. He has said that Dads is one of the best he's tasted. He likes the white satin one too. But he's a "textture guy"-- never liked squash-- etc and he says he likes the recipe for the texture of the meat.

hmm, all recipes are different though, never noticed a gelatinous texture with our recipe. Pretty meaty, that is what i like about it, besides the wonderful flavor. I won't eat gelatinous fish, eeewww.

Candling on day 4??? really???

I candle before I set and when I pull them out on day 18 or 19.    I have the space so it is no biggie. If I run out of room I will start candling earlier.

Yeah... I was excited to see how my first batch was doing so I candled early... I couldnt resist I missed seeing all the developmebt in eggs and seeing the embryos! Some people miss different things but I really missed that!

46 total chicks . Leghorn / legbar rooster over legbar and leghorn hens . Shotgun method again as my Icelandic rooster in there also .Yes I can pick them out by comb and face markings . These 3 single comb . Accidentally included my short toe punch record on the sorting box .

These 2 are from the Icelandic rooster . Rose comb and extra face markings . Sex linked pullets as no trace of a white spot on the head .

This site slow to respond for me this morning . Got a message about a plug in that I stopped . Seemed to help . Got to get going on carpet cleaning .

They r beautiful!! I cant wait to start hatching! Lasr year I only hatched chipmunk and red chicks so I hope to get more color! I did get 3 blues in my last hatch but sold them right away.

Here is a pic from candling last night. U cant see the little curcle of veins starting on the yolk but they r there! I love this egg color but hope to darken the color with my Cochin or Aussie roos. Hopefully I get at least 1 pullet from these blue eggs!! They aren't quite as blue as they look in the pics but they r the same color as Ralphs Legbar eggs!

Day is a town where they honestly do roll up the sidewalks when the towns namesake is over.
