I have 11 laying ladies and there's 2 dominating gals, but 1 in particular is stubborn to no end! She drives me crazy! She's the first one for everything; to get outside, to come in at night, and to eat. And she's not even the biggest of the group. However she's extremely smart. When they've been out during the day and I go to bring them in, I throw down some scratch feed to draw them inside, but she's onto that trick and stands in the doorway ready to bolt when I want to shut the door. And she watches me! She's very devious and tries to outwit me. Is this a battle of wills? Has anyone else experienced a rebellious bird? Is this normal?

She sounds smart and she's probably your dominant hen, you should admire her intelligence and her great survival skills. There's always a leader in a flock yours is lucky enough to have a strong one. I'm going to assume you have no rooster so she is trying to do some of the roosters job like guarding the doorway.

I agree, she is very smart. It's really quite funny how she behaves, it's great entertainment sharing the story. She is the dominant one for sure. I guess she is guarding the doorway, jus wish she'd decide to cooperate a bit more. But with the cold weather she won't be getting outside now fr a bit. Thank you for your reply. Helps explain her behaviour.

Why don't they go outside in cold weather, mine go out all winter, they only stay inside when it's snowing or blowing too much, and glad you can appreciate her personality, she will be one you'll always remember.
