I received 4 baby chicks in the mail on Wednesday morning. One of them was lethargic out of the box...I nursed her for 2 days, but she just wouldn't eat and eventually died. She had no external issues or sign of sickness. The other 3 chicks seemed strong and healthy.

This morning I woke up to find that my Buff Orpington has a bald spot on the side of her head about where I think her earlobe would be. The spot is greenish in color. She is energetic and is acting normal.

Does anyone have an idea what this could be? Thank you.

No. No green gel. I gently washed the spot with warm water and it appears a teeny bit red around the edges, almost like a scab.

In the past, I've received baby chicks with colored dots on their heads from the hatchery. When I inquired about the dots, I was told it was a way of marking the sexes and it would go away as the chicks feathered out.

The crust around the green dot could be explained by the other chicks pecking at it and irritating the skin. It's a blessing some idiot didn't choose red dots.
