Hi everybody, been following BYC since we got our babies early spring (2015) have found all the answers I have needed thru the forums!! You are all the best!! Never thought I would say I love chickens but this year after getting a dozen... I LOVE my chickens!! I just officially signed up because I have a question.
We live in NY and have shut down our pool,it is not covered... Today I found one of my girls in the pool dead.. Wanted to cry as I was not there for her and can not imagine her horror.. At any rate, I also hate to see her life go in vain and wondering if processing a drowned(or died of cold as her head was above the water..) is a good idea.. It happened this morning and it has been in the 30s for days.. Any help?? We ended up with 5 out of a straight run of 7 roosters.. We still have 3, want to process 2 as 3 is still just too many.. I thought she might be good practice. I have read the forums here about butchering so.....
Advice greatly appreciated thanks.

I might add she is(was ) a white Leghorn.. I know there is not a lot of meat on her.. We have 4 more Leghorn hens and one Buff Orphington hen and three roosters, a Orphington and two barred rock roosters..

Welcome to BYC. I am not sure of processing a bird that has died so I will leave that for another member to answer.

Thank you!! Glad to be here.. This forum has been very helpful for the nearly year I have been checking in for help. I have up until now found all my answers in the posts. Even if leghorn meat is sparse and may not be able to eat her because of drowning i thought it maybe good practice for processing the roosters... (Soon..)

sorry I wouldn't know if it is okay to process her. You might put "processing thread" in the search box - some will come up and you could ask them. Uncovered pools are death traps for chickens, they cannot swim.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you joined the flock!

For those like me that go to the "unanswered posts" the forum used doesn't seem to matter, but rather the title is what gets my attention.
