What? What? - Hen growing spurs!

We humans have a mixture of male and female hormones. I am talking about cells. Chickens have both types of cells.

Do a search on "sex changes in chickens".

I am going to do that. this is so interesting. I was scared when I saw my hen growing spurts, but now this is like the best science experiment ever.
If I was still in school I would do a report of this. How cool are chickens!!!

Ok, my girls are 5. I am not sure if that is old for a chicken or not. But would it be common for more of them to grow spurts as they get older? Like the natural
process of aging for chickens.
5 years is not a record age for a hen, but it is definitely in the upper 95% age wise. This is why i will not breed older hens and roosters unless I badly need to breed them to keep a line with good genes going.

Yes it is possible for an older hen to grow spurs but said hen will likely grow spurs or show a likely hood of doing so before she is 5 years.

I hoping I can get mine to five. I will feel like I must have done something right if they make it that long

Thanks for your post. I was wondering about the ages of hens. I had no idea how old was considered old for a hen.
This helps, thanks so much. I am not sure of the natural life span of a hen but I guess 5 is a good life for a hen.

Hi All,

I think I may have an alien chicken in my flock.

I have a flock of BO's all age 5 years.

My rooster, has been sick and away form the flock for about 3 weeks.
He is doing better now after much TLC and is now with his girls again.

I was putting the girls to bed last night and noticed that my alpha Hen is growing spurs.

I have also noticed that after their molt her tail is also taking on a rooster-ish look as well.

I know she is a hen, she is my best layer.

What is going on!!! please tell me this is normal, or as she been possessed by an alien.

Thanks
My hen did too, after taken out the Rooster from the flock. I thought it was crazy . She has as big, if not bigger spurs, than the Rooster. ???
