Roosts

Guess you'll just have to stand there all night.

Things to avoid would be anything NOT wood, or smooth wood dowels, especially if they are smaller than about 2" in diameter. Roosting behavior is about location, adequate space, and the pecking order. Saplings and tree branches are free, and dimension lumber isn't, so really whatever is convenient works fine. Mary

...which is exactly the mistake I made, using closet dowels that I even painted a nice, pretty powder blue! Needless to say they won't touch them. Actually, they seem to prefer sitting on TOP of their coop rather than in it, except to lay. Considering it nothing more than a 32 ft2 nesting box at the moment (at least it's easier to clean the poop off the roof of the coop

).

I guess I'm going to have to start looking around some of the recently harvested tree farms for some 2" Dia. or so branches. Live and learn?

I'm wondering if you put sand and scoop under these roosts?. I like the perpendicular to walls layout. Do the birds get along well since they are all same height?
No sand I just use dead leaves. And the birds tend to all huddle together as tight as they can. They have plenty of space to spread out but don't.
