40 weeks old - no egg yet

FINALLY, at 44 weeks my ameraucana started laying. But not happy because eggs look just like the olive egger - very green, not blue. (the smaller egg shown here is the ameraucana's) I had an easter egger that laid a much bluer egg than this. Bought at meyer hatchery for $20. So even though she's beautiful she's obvio

usly not a true ameraucana. See the two GREEN eggs here?

Many of the commercial hatcheries sell "Ameraucana" chickens, charging more for them. True Ameraucana and Araucana chickens are really quite rare and to guarantee the BLUE color egg you are best to purchase from a breeder. A lot of time from the hatcheries you will get that lovely MINT color not a true blue. I think it's a very deceptive practice that they should be more up front about.

I would contact Meyer and say "Hey! I ordered a blue egg layer and paid more for this! What's up?!"

I AM going to contact them. Frankly, I'm just glad to get an egg at all -- and glad I didn't end up with a ROOSTER. I was beginning to seriously wonder.... 44 weeks to lay?! And, she's SO weird. I mean, we call her our "special" chick behind her back. And not in a good way

Yes, I have one of those precious chickens too! An Araucana! Maybe it's genetic?!
