Broody hen in winter!

Well, my girl has hatched 4 out of 10 and 3 more pipped, even with that cold weather. She's been outside in a plastic covered cat litter box in a covered part of the run and all seems fine. If I were you I'd be setting some eggs!

I'm sooo excited to get some eggs under her! Any suggestions on breeds? at the moment I think I'm going to get some silkie eggs off of eBay but I also need some inspiration of colours and all sorts, so any suggestion are very much welcomed!

P.s I love pictures everyone ;)

Hi! I'm going to join this, I used to have a hen that would go broody all the time! I never let her hatch eggs, because I was afraid she was the type that would kill the chicks when hatched, but anyways she went broody twice in the winter!

Silkies are excellent pets and known for being great mothers!
Don't get standard size eggs as your hen is smaller and would only be able to handle 4 of them. Can I suggest silver spangled hamburgs, bantam Cochins, silkies, Mille fluer d'uccles and Porcelain d'uccles? I ordered one of every of those breeds and just love them! They all come in a variety of colors and are super sweet! Also if you are going to get standard sized eggs try going for lavendar Cochins, those are very sweet! I have two of them and love them to death!

Once I get a broody I will be letting her incubate eggs, can't wait!!! (It will also be my first time with a broody, I like to incubate my eggs)

I just went with a barnyard mix from a guy down the road. My problem was trying to source fertile eggs locally for the breeds I wanted. I had wanted sussex but although I have friends with these they either were getting no eggs in december or only had them running with a mixed cockeral. I asked in local sales sites with no luck either and didn't want to risk posted eggs.

I have a broody right now too, a little bantam. Thankfully I'm in Florida, but it's still been a bit cold so I brought her inside to sit. I went all the way to Alabama the other day to get her some fertile eggs to sit on. All seem to be progressing nicely. I can't wait to see what she hatches.

I have a very broody hen right now as well. I have 5 eggs under her, and I know at least one of those eggs was fertilized. It's freezing cold where I am, and do not have her under a heat lamp. I just put some hay in the nesting box she prefers to lay in, and she has done a great job so far!

Final result for my winter broody - 7 out of 10 eggs set hatched. One was chirping this morning but was well behind the first to hatch and she abandonded it. Other 2, one looked like an early quitter and one didn't look like it developed at all.

Hi. I have a question about the yellow chick next to your hen. I got one like this as a top up to my little group. I didn't know what it is. I wanted a hen chick. I just hope he didn't give me a roo because I can't keep a roo where I live. Please tell me the yellow chick is a female. ☺️
