Hands on hatching and help

Oh, sure!!!  Didja hafta tell me you and your son had a prior personal relationship with that one egg?  No pressure here......

You already made the egg famous by putting it on the Internet! No more pressure! ;)

I can't believe lockdown is sneaking up already.  Been kinda dreading it because from what I've read and seen in my own incubator before, so much can happen at that point with even eggs that had strong embryos in them.  But I sure am not dreading this one as much as I did the others - good to know the air cells look okay.  On the other eggs they were so huge even from the start.  Woohoo!  This is gonna happen!!  Suppose I should have Katie spend the night when that first pip happens!

That's what happened with the 2 batches of shipped call eggs. The first batch had such huge saddle shaped air cells, so with the second batch that had round ones I had no idea if they were to small or not!!

Peas!!! Get frozen peas, just thaw some out and give them to him... those are something the kids can give him more of and no worries... ;)

Awesome idea!! Perfect!!

Nope, but now I'm subscribed. Can't wait to read through it! Thanks!

The ants the only thing as predator that can fit other then people. I don't think my duck is doing it.

Maybe the shells are super thin and crack when the duck sits on them. How's their diet?

Ok so I went a tiny bit hands on with the first egg, I felt so guilty since its been drilled into my head that we aren't suppose to touch them, but in my heart of hearts I just felt something was wrong and my humidity was to blame, so if it's my fault that the chick is having issues, then isn't it my responsibility to help it out? Well, that's what I used as my excuse to work up the courage. The chick was becoming less vocal so I was afraid of it suffocating. I started gently chipping at the egg and once I broke the membrane over the beak, it started singing! Such a beautiful sound! I got quite a bit done until I saw a tad of blood so I quickly wrapped it in a wet paper towel and put it back in the incubator. That was almost an hour ago and it is still singing non stop lol. Here's a pic of it when I started peeling the shell away.

Now for my new questions:
-it has a bit of a "click" when it breathes, is that normal?
-also, how long should I wait before trying to assist again?

Ok, so you bought the Little Giant at TSC? Which model? And you did not buy seperate hygrometers or thermometers? Can you run out today and buy a hygrometer? And a thermometer? Early hatches can be from your temps being to high. They are really easy to calibrate. The egg in your first post looked good. It can take chicken eggs at least 24 hours after external pip to make progress. When you start assisting you want to just make the pip hole big enough so that you can dampen the membranes and check for veining. Then you can keep the exposed membranes moist with some bacitracin and keep rechecking until all the veins have receded. So is this chick out yet? It should be able to get out on its own when it's ready unless it has gotten really sticky inside from so much air being exposed to it. The clicking noise may be nothing or the chick may have breathed in some of the sticky stuff (if there is any). Does the inside of the egg look wet or really shiney? Are you still seeing veins? And they won't suffocate if they have made an external pip, even a really tiny one.

RubyNala97 RavynFallen AmyLynn2374,
Sunday about 6:30AM I still see three internal pip from egg 1 & some serious breathing. I 1st found internal pip last night.
2nd egg still about the same, with just a tad more drawback no movement in #2. (Hopefully resting) getting worried I may have some sticky egg issues going on.

This was a picture from last night.
Temperature 99to100F humidity good 60/70%.
What ya think?:barnie

Is this pic egg one or two? I'm so happy to hear that one of the eggs internally pipped!!! The draw down looks good in this pic.

I agree with Ruby. But would also like to add, if you left them in her nest for a week, she could have slightly incubated them and got them going, so they may not really be "early". I assume you started counting when you put them in the Bator. So I wouldn't be too concerned about the timing. Some could even be a few days later if she covered them differently. Good luck!

The last egg of my hatch decided to pip underneath and through the membrane yesterday. I'm happy it was able to pip at all, it was just the tiniest crack I've ever seen. but I don't think it can make progress. I opened the hole a little bigger last night and saw a dab of blood and stopped immediately and put it back. I was really hoping it would hatch on its own by this morning but no progress and membranes are dried around the pip. I'm going to try and assist further now. It's in suchlike weird position. And I can see something sticking out into the air cell but I'm not sure if it's a foot or wing. And of course the shell is really dark and thick so I can't really see to good into it. Wish me luck!!

Yeah, you're right! I never even thought about that! Good call.

Ok, I can't wait anymore, I'm asking for help.
Backstory: My Roo passed away, I was so upset I tried getting my hen to go broody so I could have a couple of his off spring. After a week of the hen refusing to go broody, I didn't want to lose the fertile eggs so I rushed out to Tractor Supply, bought an incubator and put the eggs in as outlined in the instructions. I was emotionally driven but didn't have much hope since they were laid after his death and sat in a nest box for a week but when I candled them, several had growing babies!!
Yesterday was day 18 so I decided to candle before I put them on lockdown when I noticed one had internally pipped and another had externally pipped! Oh god it's scared me bc I know it's too early. Well I can home last night and the one that externally pipped made very little progress and the internal pipped had made a hole.
As of this morning it's been 22 hours since the first pip and it has hardly any progress. It's still alive, it responds to questions that I ask it...too bad I don't speak chick to know if it needs help. My biggest fear is the humidity being too low. I know I can't trust the gauge on my incubator but it refuses to rise over 58%, even with all the wells full of water and a wet cloth.
Here's the egg I'm worried about:

Please...any help would be greatly appreciated

I agree with the other gals. You're on the right track as far as assisting and stopping. I usually give it 45 min -an hour in between my "assisting". I wouldn't worry about it being early. It's normal for me to have an internal pip or two before day 18 is over and hatchers by day 19. My last hatch I even had one internally pip pip at the end of day 17!

Looks good to me. But when it comes to stickiness in duck eggs- that's the duck girls' area.....lol

Yes, I got the Little Giant 9300. I will admit, I went about this incubation in a very immature way. I figured buying an incubator and reading the instructions and the provided gauges would be sufficient but I've quickly learned it takes so much more than that. I realize I have a lot to learn if I ever attempt another hatch (which I cannot Ever see me doing)

8am was the 24 hour mark of when I first found the external pip. I don't know how long it had been pipped up to that point. I didn't see any veines when I was helping, I just saw a tiny bit of blood near the shell and stopped. The chick is still vocal and is struggling to move but can't move at all. The membrane seems thick but that's just an opinion, I really have nothing to compare it to. I'm keeping the membrane wet with bacitracin but with all the attempted moving, it hasn't made progress. I don't think it's too sticky...,ugh I wish I was better at this!

Hi, the picture is of egg#1 , this egg also had a slight crank at the small end at week 2. No leaks.
When do I know if she's stuck?
:fl I'm getting bummed & panicky here. Ugh. It wasn't this hard last summer in my 1st homemade incubator. Maybe dumb luck? Lol freaking out here trying to stay positive.

You get better by experience. Trust me, I don't see too many "naturals" when it comes to incubation. The 93000 is awful so you've got that going against you too. The gages are usually wrong on that thing- I amsurprsed they aren't 3 days late. The hygrometers are useless and usually stay between 40-50% with or with out water in it so ignore that gage. As long as you have everyting filled and an extra cloth you should be ok. If at any time you see condensation, you have a bit too much. Keep doing what you are doing. You are doing great. Keep the membranes moistened and assist a little as long as there's no bleeding/veining. When there is stop and give it more time. Most assists are time consuming, but slow and steady has a better chance of producing a healthy strong chick.

After a lot of coaching from the sidelines (I told her/him that I could no longer help) and a lot of fussing from the chick, at 1107, it finally plopped out of its shell! I am over the moon excited!

It's name is Akia, which is African unisex name for first born. Thank everyone for the help and encouragement!
