So I'm still trying to wrap my head around genetics. And what gets passed down from parent to ken. So I just recently hatched two eggs from my hatch that were beautiful green eggs. So father was a pure breed Barred rock mother was a EE obviously. Now do the chicks automatically get the coloring laying gene. Or are they guaranteed to lay brown eggs. I'm just curious do they have the chance to lay the colored eggs. Is that gene always passed down. Like what if I breed the mixed EE/barred rock baby (when it get older) with say a RIR or black austrlorp etc.. Would those baby's still have the colored egg gene. And if so how long will this gene be passed on till it's just not there anymore?

Well since they were both EE they would have the green egg laying gene and if u were to breed an EE rooster as mentioned with a brown egg layer they with still have the egg color gene like I had done I had bred my EE rooster with a Rhode Island Red hen and some how got Bantam Rhode Island Red EE hens and one rooster which I gave to the neighbors and all of his daughters lay green eggs and I am getting ready to put in a few more except I am not using Rhode Island Red hen I will be using Americauna Silver laced rock and barred rock mixed hens eggs hoping for the fluffy face in the chicks

Here is a pic of one of the hens I will be using if u were curious of what one of those hens will look like

Yes I had posted that pic in another thread and someone said she was eye candy and welcome have any more questions about it let me know I might be able to help
Will definitely let you know if I have any other questions. My one EE barred rock mix is 33 days old and I'm almost positive she's a hen. She's barred rock coloring. So I'm curious to see what color eggs she lays. Will try to keep this updated when I find out.

Yes she should lay green eggs but we will find out I guess and let nature take its course and I am just stumped as to why I mixed my EE rooster and a Rhode Island Red hen and some how got bantams about the size of a serama and about 3-4 pounds

If your male is a pure barred Rock then all his offspring will be barred. The gene for colored eggs is closely related to pea combs. What kind of comb does s/he have?

For example last year I hatched some experimental Faverolles X EE. The lone pullet had a single comb. She lays brown eggs.

Yes as she said she is positive it's a hen so if it's a brown layer taking the green egg laying gene then she would lay green eggs

The bird in question will lay green eggs IF she inherited the blue gene from mom. There is no guarantee on that, she could have inherited the blue gene or brown gene from her. The blue gene is closely related to the pea comb gene which is why I asked which kind of comb she has. If it is a pea comb then she likely inherited the blue gene, if a single comb then likely the brown gene.
