Early season McMurray chicks dying

I have received my new flock yesterday and so far around 5 chicks have died out of 36. ..they just get really lethargic and sleepy looking and just fall over after about 12 hours. Don't know if it is fairly normal or the bad weather and cold coming from the hatchery. ..dono... any suggestions. ..I have the brooder set up correctly by the book...
The chicks effected just seem not to be able to get up on there feet and die...please need some helpful advice

I don't have any helpful suggestions as to why your chicks are dying, but I'd call McMurray and let them know. In the past they've been good about reimbursing for early losses like that.
 
You run a terrible risk when chicks are shipped during extremely cold weather. It was 70 degrees here today. But 5 days ago, it was -5 degrees and the high for that day was 25 degrees.

If a chick gets thoroughly chilled, sometimes they will just not recover.

What day of the week were the chicks shipped??
 
I'm so sorry your losing your chicks. I wish I had some advice but the only thing those symptoms bring to mind for me is coccidosis. If they do have cocci you usually can be successful by treating the whole flock of chicks with Amprolium. The brand name differs depending where you are at in the country but where I live the brand name is Corid. Coccidosis CAN be present without the presentation of bloody stool. If they have been exposed to soil or even there own waste it is possible for them to contract coccidosis. Use your best judgment based on there behavior to treat or not. Thats just what comes to mind with those symptoms. It could also be shipping stress. sorry i couldnt be more help.Good luck and I'm sorry for your losses.

I'd try giving them Poultry Nutri-drench to hopefully stabilize the rest. If you can't find that use poultry electrolytes. Call McMurray on Monday to report the losses.
 
It is hard to say what it is. I would give them some electrolyte. Sometimes the change in temperature from shipping to brooder can be a problem. You can make your on electrolyte

1 Cup Water
2 teaspoons sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon baking soda​

Add this to one gallon of their drinking water.

yeah it's been some wicked weather out lately. ..the shipped on the 17th and got them yesterday afternoon. ..pacific time

I'm using quick chick. ..is that as good ?

yeah could possibly be cocci...now I don't know how McMurray works but most of the chickies that died are the ones they threw in as extra. ..not sure if they were vaccinated along with the others. .did pay for both vaccinations. .but who knows if they work well...
