I think I might go with a combination of rice hulls and chopped straw/shredded leaves. The hulls should help keep the latter from matting up so easily, while using the straw/leaves would be less expensive. There is a commercial distributor of the rice hulls here in Saint Louis that allows retail purchases...I'm going to see if they would let me pick it up to save on shipping (which might be a deal breaker).
