Rats

Terriers are amazing, and mine get 3 or 4 a year. Problem is, rats are fast, and they know the territory, and their first instinct is to dodge under someplace the dogs can't go. What the dogs do is keep the gene pool clean.

I've managed to trap 3 this year, mainly by being patient, and setting them up. Got 2 with the old style Victor traps, and one in a live trap. Trick is to leave the Victor traps un set but baited (I used old cat food) until the rats eat the bait. Then set the trap and bang! Use rubber gloves, and it's a good idea to bleach them before using to destroy any scent.
The rats were eating my chickens out of house and home until I got a rooster - a large fowl Cochin - and the rats have disappeared.

Many years ago I had a rat issue.

I have food and water available 24/7 in the run, and coop.

I now also have bait stations 24/7.

First time in years, I see rat tunnels in the outdoor deep litter run, not many, 2 or 3, but very active.

I don't panic.

I do nothing but rake the tunnels closed to see if they are maintained.

For 3 days, they were.

Then nothing...

Now 2 or 3 weeks later, still nothing.

Rats are everywhere, the idea is to stop them from colonizing.

A visitor arrives, hope it is dead before it can tell its friends and multiply.

Simple preventive maintenance.
