I have a pullet that you would think was a he but nope she is a she so I been told. Even though she has to be the highest and first to do everything she does not even allow Blackie to push her around. How ever I noticed with Blackie when he tries to pick a fight he flares on the back of the neck. Noone else does that. So far.Some of the way I tell is by attitude.And their stance.
ahh yeah I noticed today some of the galls are too.Some chickens may flare their neck feathers some may not.Chickens think size determines everything.Who is more dominate,who lies where in the pecking order everything.Roosters don't just flare their feathers.
