Howdy, soon to be chicken owners here in Floresville. Built a coop with run and just about to place a order with Cackle for some Dominiques and Wyandottes. Not sure if I wanted to get a rooster or not. We have a lot of hawks around the house and heard they help with that. Any suggestions or pros and cons on the rooster ?

Hi and
welcome-byc.gif
- glad that you have joined us. A roo will certainly make a good alarm caller, but as for anything else, he is more likely to be killed or injured by a hawk (assuming he is not a coward to begin with). People's opinions vary on the subject of roos - I'd suggest typing something like "Roo, yes or no?" in the search box and seeing what pops up.

More generally, the Learning Centre is a great resource, even for experienced chicken keepers - loads of info on anything chicken. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Joining your state thread will also put you in contact with other BYC members in your area.

The members here are amazing - very friendly and helpful, so if you need an answer to a question or simply want some reassurance that what you are doing is ok, then post away - we all help each other out here at BYC.

All the best

There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to join the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around the run. I wishing you luck on your chicken adventure. :frow

A lot of folks don't keep roosters any more unless they need him for "fertile" eggs to sell or hatch. The hens are usually much happier with them.
