We've had Norman for 2 years now. he is free range and even though he's slow he's been doing well. All of a sudden in the last couple of days he seems to be out of breath and tonight when I checked on him he looked purple. He doesn't have feathers underneath and he's bluish/purple. I realize he may be at his end of days but, wondered if I can help him at all?

Please be nice.. we kinda love him.

It sounds like his heart is giving out, unfortunately with the BB it's usually the heart or the legs that give out, you must have taken good care of him for him to be two years old. I don't think you can do anything to help him, sorry.

Thank you for taking the time to answer ;-) He is up and walking this morning but, still not quite right. He's had a good life so I guess when the time comes I can't feel to bad. Poor dude!

Update on Norman Turkey. I decided to check for parasites and he had a pretty heavy load of lice so I treated for that. Also started giving him furosemide (lasix) He is doing so much better. Just thought I'd post this here in case others have a big Ole BBB that they love and want to give a little help too. BTW, Pilling turkey's isn't as easy as chickens..LOL

I have BBB hen, who I think is permanently damage from having lice. I rescued her and she had no feathers on her under carriage. Took me sometime to figure out why she no longer roosts like she used too. She can only jump maybe 2ft, and struggles a bit when doing it. =[ but I'm in the same boat, we love her and I can't imagine putting her down. She just layed her very first clutch, and tried so hard to sit. But I am gonna introduce chick's to her tonight =]
