Rooster Rescue in Virginia?

Good morning all!

Well...our rooster, Bob, is just doing his job as a rooster, I guess, but he has become too aggressive and needs to go. For the first year, he was a great rooster. He was nice and gentle and you could pick him up and everything. In his second year, he became more aggressive. We tried picking him up each time he charged to let him know who was boss. We tried looking him in the eye (or that direction) to establish dominance. We tried a squirt bottle with water.

Then it happened. He spurred my husband so badly that it required a tetanus shot, 2 weeks of antibiotics and scarring. Since then, we won't let the kids go in the coop and we watch our backs when we have to go in.

He is good with the hens, but not so much with people.

He needs to go but we don't want him to be eaten. After all, he is just doing what roosters are supposed to do.

Does anyone know if there is a rooster rescue in Virginia? I live in Virginia Beach if that helps.

Bob is not "just doing his job as a rooster". He is attacking and trying to dominate you. You are making the right choice in getting rid of him. If he were my bird, he'd be in the freezer. Since that isn't an option for you, I would suggest putting as ad in the paper or Craigslist with FULL disclosure as to why you're getting rid of him, and don't ask questions if you find someone to take him.
 
Or cull him and plant a rosebush on top of him!

Agree with bobbi-j - not doing his job, slipped over the edge into the dark side! Ain't coming back. A vicious dog, people put down, what is the difference?
 
He isn't "doing what roosters are supposed to do". He is being a jerk, and a dangerous one at that. Do you have a dog crate? Or are you able to come up with some sort of similar secure enclosure? I would put him in jail until you can find someone to take him. While I know you don't want him to be eaten, you are going to have a very difficult time finding anyone willing to take on such an aggressive bird. If he were mine he would have been long gone by now. Since you do not want to go that route, you should consider bobbi-j's advice and list him on Craigslist. Make sure you disclose his aggressive nature and do not ask questions if you are able to find someone willing to take him.

Mrs. K gives good advice as well. Cull him and let him fertilize a nice new ornamental landscape plant. Another nice solution for an evil rooster.
 
I'm not sure about rooster rescues in your area. However, I'd place an ad on Craigslist for a swap rooster or something.
 
Seriously?! Just because the behavior isn't appropriate or is dysfunctional doesn't mean the rooster is "evil." If you have to cull it or give it away to somebody else, that's fine and great (even recommended). But please, guys, take the moral judgement out of it--it's just a chicken! Punishing an animal by putting it in "jail" or otherwise being cruel to it is ABUSE! Our jobs as the human managers is to resolve the problems, not to dole out "punishment" like some old testament god just because we're POed...
 
I did not mean that the bird was evil, just an aggressive violent bird that is very unlikely to change his ways. I was just using a bit of colorful language. While I am not in favor of abusing animals, I am not in favor of people being damaged by a bird either. Confining the bird to prevent that is ok in my judgement.

I agree with Folly's Place and Mrs. K. "Jail" is just a term that is used here often. And, yes - when the bird is dangerous, it should be locked up for the safety of its keepers. Well, OK - locked up or put in the freezer, but the freezer doesn't appear to be an option in this case, so jail it should be!

.....and if 're-homing' .....it should be with full disclosure that the bird has shown human aggression.
