Australorp very swollen and tender under vent

Unfortunately, my sweet girl passed away last night. she was doing fine, but then someone pecked at her(I'm assuming) and opened up her butt and her intestines were out of her body. we tried to save her, but were unable. I am hoping to figure out what happened to her to prevent it from happening to any other chickens. it's a devastating loss, she was one of the sweetest, calmest, most lovable girls, absolutely one of my favorites.
