I am starting my second flock of chicks, but am running into some difficulty finding the breeds that I want hatching around the same times. So far I have 9 different breeds that hatched on Thursday, 3/24 including Barred Rock, Wyandottes, Americaunas, and others. In this mix I also bought a silkie chick straight run, but it was the only chick the hatchery had left.

I would really like to increase my chances of a female silkie by buying a couple more, but cannot find any that hatched around the same times. I finally found some that are 2 weeks old, but I also found some that will be hatching on 3/31. Would the older ones be better for the flock, or should I purchase a couple that hatch on 3/31? Help!

One person I chatted with said that I should get the older ones because silkies develop slower and are smaller as chicks. But I already have one silkie that hatched 3/24 and is fine with the other breeds.

One person I chatted with said that I should choose the older silkies because they develop slower than other breeds and will be the same size as my other four day old chicks. However, my one silkie that hatched on 3/24 is doing fine with the other breeds..

I have six silkie chicks right now and one of them is the largest chick in the brooder despite getting them a week after some other standard breeds! Another chick is 1/2 his/her size and the rest range somewhere in between. So, YMMV.
