I have a hen who has been very sick for 3 months.I don't know if this is why she got sick but she had lice. I treated her and the others a while back and have been spraying poultry protector on them about 2 times a week. They also have DE Earth. I discovered today my 2 guinea pigs have the lice now too.I was going to put invermectin on the guineas but I simply don't feel safe using that stuff so I called a vet. They said ivermectin would be fine for the guineas and my chickens except for my sick Lilybug. They said she may be to weak to handle it. Obviously the DE Earth and Poultry Protector is not doing the job because as the vet said if my guineas have the lice she probably still does too. I found Pyranha flea, tick, and lice shampoo online and am wondering if anyone knows if this would be something that can be used on a weak hen. She is only one pound and is gasping for air while lying down or being held.I have a thread called "Gasping for air only while lying down or being held" Any suggestions would be great.Thank you!

I would look into NEEM oil. One thing I have personally noticed with organic and natural methods is they are great preventative but are not always strong enough to cure an infestation. But as your hen is to weak to handle the stronger chemicals, go with the gentler and maybe you can strengthen her up enough to use the harsher telreatment later.

Do you have her quarantined?
We have Lilybug in the house, but now our guinea pigs and rabbits have lice so I have no safe place to put her.Our house is probably infested now and I have no idea how to get rid of them. We don't know for sure if her illness is related to the lice infestation but being we had a hen pass away with the same symptom and this all happened during the infestation;my guess would be the lice is the cause. She is fighting for air so badly she is not getting sleep. I don't know what to do! Would bathing her with dawn dish soap help?I thought we got rid of the lice but I imagine since I use Poultry Protector and DE Earth quite often they aren't getting enough time to lay eggs and they are hard to see there for it is possible she does still have them.Any suggestions about the lice and ways to relieve her breathing is extremely appreciated. She is our baby and can not afford a vet right now even though we want to take her to one.She has been to 4 vets and they had no idea what is wrong.I finally found a vet that actually treats chickens but now I can't afford to take her! PRAYING for a MIRACLE!!!!

Do not bathe her! Bathing her will probably kill her. Call your vet and ask about Vectra 3D or using a permethrin based dust.

I definitely won't bathe her! Thank you for telling me!I don't even know if lice is the problem. She was doing fair, but suddenly she is awful but still eats.I even caught her stretched out laying in a sunny spot on our floor. The breathing use to be a problem only at night but now it is when she decides to lay down.I've tried to think of ideas where she can lay down with no pressure on her body but I can't figure it out.SO LOST. I have 4 weeks till I can come up with vet funds!PRAYING SO HARD!!!!!Thank you Kathy

Does it feel like she has fluid in her belly?

-Kathy
No fluid.Directly under her feels hard, but I think it may just be her bone.I don't understand the mystery to this breathing.Does comb color help rule out and help diagnosis? It is very pale pink.
